Project Case Study
Escalator removal / staircase installation, associated works including construction of new ATM room and construction works within the existing vacant shopping units.
Intu Chapelfield Shopping Centre
40-46 St Stephens St
The project consisted of cutting through the existing Mall floor at upper ground level to enable construction of a new staircase, prior to the removal of the escalator that linked the lower and upper floors directly in front of “House of Fraser”.
Structural steel was installed right down to the underground car park level to support the new staircase.
The escalators had to be lowered and transported to the main doors located on St Stephens.
The contract involved certain elements of design portion and due to the location was logistically a very complex project to undertake.
Majority of works were undertaken outside of normal operating hours, the photos below give some indication of scale and the complexity of completing works like this with minimum disruption.
Ongoing associated works were the making good of the balustrades and Mall flooring, constructing a new ATM room adjacent to the constructed staircase and carrying out strip out and structural alterations to two vacant shopping units.
All the works had to be undertaken in clearly defined timescales with no room for manoeuvre, whilst ensuring that Health, Safety and Quality standards were not compromised.
Co-operation and communication between the Holmes Team and Intu Staff was of the highest level.
All in all the works were probably one of the most intricate and challenging projects we have undertaken as a company.
